DISCOVERING YOUR PERSONALISED HEALTH CODE WITH 3P MEDICINE
Have you noticed that almost everyone is taking some kind of supplements? Something for either fatigue, tiredness, insomnia, weight loss, hair growth, joint pain, aging, heartburn, loss of libido, gut problems ….and so on!
Many individuals take quite a few without even knowing whether or not these supplements are really working for them and without checking blood biomarkers. This is called self-medication or self-supplementation! Usually, this is just a guessing game, a “maybe it will help” approach! And usually, it is not working! People also often think these products are “natural” and that they don’t have many negative side effects. But the interaction between supplements and cell functioning is more complex and requires substantial knowledge of functional medicine. Conventional medicine does not focus on treating the patient holistically to prevent potential disease but is rather fixated on symptom management. Therefore the majority of individuals are forced to go down this route of self-supplementation as they are not aware of doctors trained in personalized functional medicine Dr. Nedic has been practicing aesthetic medicine for 15 years and 3P medicine for more than 10 years.
3P MEDICINE stands for:
Personalised medicine is a step ahead of the ‘one size fits all’ medical approach. It uses new methods to better manage a patient’s health. We are all unique. Our health or disease is determined simultaneously by our genetic make –up, lifestyle and environment. By considering these three factors for each individual, we can better understand their predisposition to develop certain diseases. For example, a middle-aged female who has “bad” detoxification genes and works in the painting industry, developed fibromyalgia and autoimmune underactive thyroid, but her identical twin sister who is a teacher did not! If she was seen by a conventional medical doctor-a GP for example, she would be prescribed thyroid medication (which she would have to continue for the rest of her life) and some painkillers. However, in personalised medicine, we would approach her differently. Firstly we would prove that there are genes affecting adequate detoxification and then we would conduct a functional medicine work up to see how extensive the problem is. Additionally, we would investigate her environmental influences and would most definitely introduce detoxification support, lifestyle changes (job change) and finally, add specific supplements that alter the expression of her “bad” genes. Thyroid medication will be given as a temporary solution whilst the condition is remedying. Personalised medicine treats the whole individual and not a specific symptom!
We use all the principles of functional medicine to not only establish optimal cell functioning but also the optimal functioning of the whole body and mind. This requires precision and luckily many laboratories overseas, and increasingly in South Africa, recognize the need to precisely measure these cell functions. Therefore, we now have accurate tests (that are not used by conventional medicine) available such as hormone urinary metabolites, organic acid tests, functional biomarkers, Methylation biomarkers, comprehensive gut analysis to name a few. This is useful in a number of instances. For example, people no longer have to guess whether or not they need the B12 injection as there is an organic acid test which precisely checks the level of Vitamin B12. Additionally, not all increased cholesterol is dangerous. We check the quantity of oxidized cholesterol and the particle size of LDL cholesterol to establish the degree of dangerous effect. Furthermore, we can check the 8 different estrogen metabolites to verify whether or not you are able to favorably metabolise estrogen and whether you are a suitable candidate for HRT? Finally, by checking the urinary metabolites of cortisol we can precisely tell how stressed you are. All of these are science-based tests that help us to understand how an individual ’s genetic make-up, lifestyle, and environment can alter optimal bodily function and potentially create disease.
This precision then helps us to introduce the most important principle of functional medicine which is to treat the root of the problem and not the outcome or symptom. Let’s imagine you have insomnia. This could be due to high cortisol, low melatonin, low progesterone and estrogen, affected neurotransmitters, unbalanced methylation or exposure to blue light by watching TV and working on a computer until late in the evening! Do we simply give you a sleeping tablet? NO! We find the root of the problem and treat the cause.
Participation is an essential aspect of 3P medicine which aims to empower patients to take control of their own health and well-being. 3P medicine has brought with it a change in roles where doctors are less authoritative and act more as coaches, working together with patients to actively engage in their own health. Patients will have to take an active participation in understanding and applying all lifestyle interventions, diet, supplements, sleeping hygiene, anti-stress techniques to “make it happen”.This is the only way to remove the cause of disease and restore health and well-being
